10 Years of the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project In the year 2000 the golden-headed langur was in danger of going extinct. There were only about 50 animals living on Cat Ba Island. This was the time, as Muenster Zoo, the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Population (ZGAP) and Vietnamese authorities came together and started the “Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project” (CBLCP). One year later the Stiftung Artenschutz joined in.
Now, ten years later, we can proudly look back at what the CBLCP had achieved. Not only the dramatic decline of the langur population has been effectively halted, moreover it was successfully reversed. The langur population on Cat Ba started to grow again. In 2010, three babies were born; in total 24 babies were born since the project started. In 2001 the Langur Sanctuary was established inside the Cat Ba National Park. The strictly protected area is heaven for the majority of the langur population as well as for many other fascinating animals.
With many people and institutions working together for the conservation of these remarkable animals, the Cat Ba langur became a symbol for the Cat Ba Island through numerous campaigns and raising awareness in schools and villages.
None of these achievements would have been possible without the close cooperation with our Vietnamese partners.
We would like to gratefully thank to our supporters and look forward to achieving a thriving langur population, which is the pride and symbol of Cat Ba in the next 10 years and beyond! Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project
