Cikananga: Javan Warty Pigs rescued from dog fights The Javan Warty Pig is considered to be one of the most endangered pig species worldwide. Its population has been experiencing a serious decline, estimated to be more than 50 Prozent over the last 20 years. This drastic decrease results primarily from the destruction of its habitat and the intensive hunting pressure.
However, a bloody tradition joins the other threats to the survival of Javan Warty Pigs – the hog-dog fighting. These fights are popular on Java. The animals have to fight until death or until they are so exhausted or badly injured that they are not able to fight any more.
Thanks to the efforts of the Cikananga Wild Animal Rescue Centre staff, two female Javan Warty Pigs have been rescued from such a cruel fate. The Cikananga team rescued a five month old young pig and a 4-5 year old female and brought them to the centre.
The young animal was in very good condition and felt quite comfortable within five minutes after it had been brought to its enclosure. It fed on its food and immediately started digging around. The older female was, apart from the stress caused by the dog fights, in relative good condition, too. The Cikananga staff hopes that she will also recover soon.
The rescued animals are supposed to participate in the Javan Warty Pig breeding programme at Cikananga. We hope that they will recover soon, grow up healthy and bring up fit offspring.
